How to let users personalize their content?

I want to create a highly personalized site for my users. However, I haven't come across any tips or solutions in my searches.

Are there any plugins, widgets, etc out there that would let each of my users view content that they specify in their profile? Or are there any tutorials for how to accomplish this functionality with some snippets?

Here are some examples of what I'm referring to with "personalized." Each user could:

• Choose which category of posts they want displayed by default (such as choosing one or more Tags)


• Save articles/posts as "favorites" which they can easily access in future sessions


• View content based on their location (such as a weather plugin)
